Book review of The Spear and the Sentinel by J.L. Hancock . ISBN: < Back The Spear and the Sentinel J.L. Hancock Geopolitical Thriller Braveship Books Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest A World on the Brink: A Geopolitical Thriller of Technology, Espionage, and Resilience This high-stakes geopolitical thriller "The Spear and the Sentinel" plunges readers into a world of advanced technology, international espionage, and the enduring power of human resilience. With its fast-paced narrative and intricate plot, the book is a perfect fit for those who crave complex stories involving military operations, cutting-edge science, and global political intrigue. Spanning diverse locations, from the remote Kunashir Island near Japan to the turbulent Xinjiang region of China, the story unfolds in the contemporary era, grappling with issues ripped from today's headlines. The core conflict ignites with a mysterious and violent incident on Kunashir Island, investigated by the determined Major Igor Orlov. Simultaneously, Kobra Siddik, a courageous Uyghur woman, escapes a Chinese government facility in East Turkistan, driven by a desperate need to expose the horrific atrocities committed against her people. Thousands of miles away in San Diego, Voodoo and Sparks, members of a US Naval Special Warfare team, prepare for a dangerous mission involving artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, in Kazakhstan, physicists Sergei and Misha Titov achieve a groundbreaking discovery in quantum sensing technology, a breakthrough that unwittingly unleashes unforeseen dangers. These seemingly disparate threads begin to weave together as Voodoo and his team embark on a critical mission: to sabotage China's Integrated Joint Operations Platform (IJOP), a powerful AI surveillance tool with far-reaching implications. Back in Xinjiang, Inspector Chen is tasked with capturing Kobra Siddik, whose escape threatens to expose deeply sensitive information about Chinese human rights abuses and the nation's technological overreach. The narrative skillfully explores the ethical and geopolitical ramifications of these advanced technologies, forcing the characters to navigate a treacherous landscape of shifting alliances, betrayals, and high-stakes operations. The tension escalates as Voodoo and his team infiltrate a heavily guarded facility in Yining, China, their objective to rescue Kobra's mother and uncover crucial intelligence. Their daring operation leads to a climactic confrontation involving cutting-edge Chinese weaponry, and an unexpected ally, forcing them to rely on all their skills to survive. The resolution offers a powerful message about the importance of vigilance, innovation, and international collaboration in the face of emerging global threats. The team's perilous mission bears the weight of the sacrifices made and concludes, leaving the reader with a sense of both unease and hope. "The Spear and the Sentinel" is a gripping exploration of the intersection of technology, politics, and human rights in the 21st century. It challenges readers to confront the profound implications of rapid technological progress and the ethical responsibilities that accompany such power. Through its intricate plot, well-developed characters, and pulse-pounding action, the story delivers a thrilling and thought-provoking experience that resonates deeply with contemporary global issues. Book review of Hunger by Nihaarika Negi . ISBN: 978-1964226088 < Back Hunger Nihaarika Negi The Lab Press Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest Filmmaker Negi and artist Bocardo craft a grotesque colonial horror story set in 1896 Bombay, following a mutant test subject named Izna as she navigates a hallucinatory landscape of sadistic British experiments and embraces her own supernatural hunger. If most horror stories are about the fear of losing one’s humanity, Nihaarika Negi’s “Hunger” is about the terrifying necessity of shedding it to survive. Published by The Lab Press, this is a towering achievement in "prestige horror," a book that is as intellectually demanding as it is viscerally revolting. Set in British-occupied Bombay during the 1896 bubonic plague, the story centers on Izna, a famine survivor who is treated less like a patient and more like biological scrap. Negi intertwines historical atrocity with supernatural folklore. By introducing the Pisach, a flesh-eating demon from Indian mythology, the book suggests that the British Empire didn't just bring "civilization"; it brought a spiritual parasite that fed on Indian soil and souls alike. The central conflict is a masterclass in tension. Izna’s transformation into a mutant-monster isn't just a "superpower" origin story; it is a grim trade. She gives up her soul to gain the teeth necessary to bite back at an empire that is literally devouring her people. The collaboration between Joe Bocardo and José Villarrubia is nothing short of haunting. Bocardo captures the skeletal reality of the famine camps with a stark, unflinching line. When the horror turns supernatural, his designs for the "mutants" are grotesque, wet, and genuinely unsettling. Legendary Villarrubia uses a color palette of decay that feels like a fever dream. The pages are drenched in sickly ochres, bruised purples, and a deep, arterial red that feels heavy on the reader's mind and skin. This is not "fun" horror. It is furious horror. Negi uses the character of William Wallace Hooper, a real historical figure known for his cold, clinical photography of famine victims, to critique "the gaze." The book argues that documenting suffering without intervening is a form of violence. In “Hunger,” the camera is as much a weapon as a bayonet. Watching Izna reclaim her image by becoming a monster that the camera can barely capture is one of the most satisfying, albeit bloody, arcs in recent graphic fiction. “Hunger” is a difficult, beautiful, and essential read. It sits in the same rarified air as works like “Infidel” or “The Low, Low Woods,” using the genre to excavate traumas that history books often gloss over. It is a story of revenge, but it’s also a story of what remains after you’ve been stripped of everything except your appetite. Negi hasn't just written a horror comic; she’s written a manifesto in blood. It is a reminder that the most dangerous thing in the world is a person who has been told they are nothing, and finally decides to agree, with teeth. Best for fans of: “The Terror” by Dan Simmons, “Kill Bill,” post-colonial theory, and high-art horror that isn't afraid to get its hands very, very dirty. Previous Next

Book review of Mad Dog Morgan by Adam Lawson . ISBN: 9781964226224 < Back Mad Dog Morgan Adam Lawson Gothic horror, supernatural thriller, wrestling, drinking, graphic novel The Lab Press Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest A collision of cosmic horror and pro wrestling, this supernatural thriller probes the deep scars of trauma and addiction—and the desperate identities we forge to endure them. Archetypal haunted houses have long served as psychological mirrors, but few reflect inner decay as intensely as the title location in Mad Dog Morgan written by Adam Lawson with art by Maxi Dall’O. Equal parts Gothic horror, supernatural thriller, and character study, the graphic novel weaves industrial wrestling lore with cosmic horror to explore the overlap of trauma and addiction—and the fragile identities we construct to survive them. Lawson follows Mitchell “Mad Dog” Morgan, a washed-up indie wrestler whose history of abuse and alcoholism fuels an insatiable need for validation. Reeling from a scripted, drunken ring loss and a sudden eviction, Mad Dog squats in the dilapidated Gideon House, where his entry becomes less a monster hunt than an excavation of the past he spent decades burying. Dall’O’s grunge-inspired art tracks this unraveling through jagged linework and oppressive textures, capturing a Gothic mansion that simultaneously floats through a surreal, liminal void. Crucially, the house reveals itself only to those bearing profound emotional wounds, including the foster girl next door. Notably, the girl is no passive observer. Once a promising high school wrestler, her athletic career was cut short when her mother’s drunk driving killed herself and left the teenager wheelchair-bound. Inheriting the consequences of an addiction she did not choose, her trajectory mirrors that of Mad Dog. Dall’O reinforces their shared struggle through recurring one-point perspective panels framing both characters from identical angles. Inside the house, psychological horror manifests visually: Omnipresent eyes embed in walls, glare from a grotesque hag, and even multiply across a subsurface leviathan, subjecting Mad Dog to constant judgment. The hag’s writhing mass of umbilical cords warps motherhood into something predatory, embodying Mad Dog’s own mother, a passive bystander to his father’s violence. Mad Dog’s physical and emotional armor receives a sharper metaphor through the house’s walls. As a young wrestler, Mad Dog punched through his mentor’s basement drywall to discover a hidden lucha libre mask; years later, he reaches into a similar breach inside Gideon House, with each broken barrier revealing yet another layer of his hidden identity. Far more than decorative ring gear, the sacred lucha libre mask represents change and legacymaking. And for a man fortified by thick bones mixed with cheap liquor and deep-seated self-loathing, the mask provides a heroic identity he cannot inhabit on his own. This personal struggle scales to a broader cultural critique on the Gideon House, which has devoured generations of public figures (including celebrities, bodybuilders, and entertainers) whose glamour masked private failure. Their collective suffering feeds a tentacled leviathan beneath the foundation, sustained entirely by a parasitic cycle of addiction. Mad Dog’s climax mirrors a high-stakes wrestling main event as he destroys the remains of original owner Charles Gideon, collapsing generations of built-up pain. While Lawson leaves Mad Dog’s personal fate ambiguous, the true emotional payoff belongs to the foster girl. When Mad Dog bestows upon her the mask, she chooses action over despair, proving that while trauma can be inherited, resilience can be passed down, too. Packed with Lovecraftian imagery and Jungian symbolism, Mad Dog Morgan anchors cosmic dread in the deeply human stakes of psychological horror. Lawson and Dall’O craft a haunting meditation on identity, inherited trauma, and the courage to become something greater than the pain that shaped us. Because in the end, beyond grotesque monsters and wrestling theatrics, lies a story that finds transformation upon confronting the past. Previous Next

  • Amsterdam University Press Acquires Australian ATF Press Publishing Group | Printed Word Reviews

< Back Amsterdam University Press Acquires Australian ATF Press Publishing Group July 1, 2026 at 7:17:16 AM Amsterdam University Press (AUP in the Netherlands) has officially announced the acquisition of ATF Press Publishing Group, a prominent independent academic publisher based in Adelaide, Australia. The deal, which takes effect on July 1, 2026, marks a major strategic expansion for AUP in the fields of theology, religious studies, and social ethics. The acquisition incorporates ATF Press’s entire backlist of more than 400 titles produced over its 34-year history. Moving forward, ATF Press’s established collections will continue to exist under the ATF imprint within AUP. The complete integration process is scheduled to be finalized by the end of 2026. Jan-Peter Wissink, Director of Amsterdam University Press, hailed the acquisition as a major milestone for the organization. "ATF Press has an impressive history of internationalisation, including translations, and an extensive backlist covering theology, history, and social ethics," Wissink said. "Its inclusion within Amsterdam University Press represents an exciting new chapter for us and will significantly expand our list of theological and religious publications." Founded in Adelaide in 1993, ATF Press has built a reputation for publishing influential books and peer-refereed journals centered on ethical and social issues, ranging from religion and art to the environment and space exploration. Professor Paul Babie, Chair of ATF Press (Australia) Ltd., noted that the acquisition ensures the long-term preservation of the independent publisher's legacy. "We are proud of our history as an independent publisher, and our contribution to theology as a science," Babie stated. "With this acquisition, our backlist will be in capable hands to ensure continuity. Other publishing houses in this region have come and gone, but we have survived – a mark of international recognition of what we have achieved." As part of the structural transition, ATF’s Hilary Regan will remain involved as a commissioning editor, working alongside the incoming ATF Managing Director, Jörg Persch. AUP plans to leverage its global distribution network to make ATF’s backlist, including key English translations of theological works, more widely available in both digital and print formats. A number of these titles will become accessible to international audiences for the first time. Once the transition wraps up at the end of the year, all ATF Press titles and new commissions will be available directly through the Amsterdam University Press website. Current distribution agreements will remain active until December 1, 2026, at which point global distribution will officially transfer to Taylor & Francis . To commemorate the new partnership, a reception celebrating ATF's publishing history will be held in Adelaide on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, coinciding with the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) International Meeting . • Survey Opens on AI Use in Book Industry | Printed Word Reviews

< Back Survey Opens on AI Use in Book Industry July 8, 2026 at 6:33:23 AM A pair of North American publishing organizations is running its second annual survey on the use of AI in the publishing industry this summer. The survey, which is being run by BookNet Canada and the Book Interest Study Group in the U.S., aims to get a general understanding of the AI landscape in publishing by asking a variety of book professionals about their current or prospective AI use and what they want to see in the industry. It’s an extension of the groups’ first survey, which ran in 2025. This year’s survey is comprehensive. It asks questions like whether and how a respondent uses AI tools, with responses ranging from “Incorporating AI into my existing structures or workflows” to “Actively discouraging others from using AI.” It asks for examples of how AI might have boosted a respondent’s efficiency, or whether they have ethical objections to using it. The 2025 survey reached people across the publishing industry, with a total of over 500 participants. Interestingly, it did not find a consensus on AI use. This mirrors the response to AI in a variety of industries, including education , law , and medicine . “Individuals working at larger organizations report higher levels of AI use and greater interest in training opportunities, while respondents at smaller organizations appear more hesitant,” the 2025 report read. “Respondents frequently emphasized concerns about copyright, ethics, job impacts, environmental costs, and the reliability of AI-generated outputs. At the same time, many participants acknowledged that AI tools may offer practical benefits for limited operational tasks when used with human oversight.” As different varieties of AI tools proliferate, it will be interesting to see how responses have changed in publishing this year when the survey is released. The organizations running it seem to think so, too—they’re already planning a 2027 survey. • How Little Free Library Is Leveraging the Screen Adaptation Surge to Drive Backlist Discovery and Equalize Access | Printed Word Reviews

< Back How Little Free Library Is Leveraging the Screen Adaptation Surge to Drive Backlist Discovery and Equalize Access August 6, 2026 at 2:00:30 PM As film and television adaptations continue to serve as primary catalysts for book sales and backlist resurgence, non-profit book-sharing organization Little Free Library (LFL) is aligning with the adaptation boom according to an exclusive People.com article. By utilizing its global network of over 200,000 neighborhood book-exchange boxes, now available in all 50 states and 128 countries, LFL is transforming hyper-local literacy infrastructure into an unexpected discovery pipeline for adapted titles by bridging the gap between screen hype and physical print consumption, particularly in underserved markets. When a streaming service or studio greenlights a book adaptation, whether a blockbuster series ( Bridgerton , Lessons in Chemistry , The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo ) or a festival indie, the resulting spike in consumer demand often causes friction points across traditional retail. Typically backlist demand surges unexpectedly, leading to stockouts at retail and long hold queues at municipal library systems. Anyone say Odessey? And, readers in "book deserts," the rural or economically disadvantaged areas without local independent bookstores or functioning public branch libraries, are frequently shut out from riding the cultural wave of an adaptation. LFL’s initiative addresses these distribution and discoverability gaps by mobilizing volunteer stewards, studio partnerships, and targeted book grants to seed adapted titles directly into neighborhood nodes. Trade marketing teams routinely allocate budgets for co-op retail placement, social media ads, and press tours around an adaptation release. Integrating grassroots book-sharing networks offers a high-impact, low-friction addition to tie-in strategy. Placing advance tie-in editions or target backlist titles into community boxes creates organic, word-of-mouth buzz in physical spaces gives it a hyperlocal awareness. And of course, it reaches demographics that may not regularly shop at traditional brick-and-mortar stores or hold active library cards. Screen adaptations are the ultimate backlist revivifiers. LFL’s involvement extends the tail of these surges. After the initial retail sales peak surrounding a premiere, donated or seeded copies continue circulating endlessly through neighborhood boxes. This perpetual circulation keeps it active in public consciousness long after a show's season finale. The screen-to-page pipeline is no longer just about driving e-commerce clicks or retail bestseller lists—it’s about total audience capture across every available distribution channel. For publishers and media rights holders, viewing grassroots networks like Little Free Library as an integral partner in an adaptation’s promotional lifecycle offers a dual win: maximizing the books’ reach while delivering on essential literacy access.
