< Back The Dancing Darlings "The Dancing Darlings" Honored at Independent Press Awards: A Psychologist's Journey to Children's Literature Dr. Angela Kyparissis, a clinical and forensic psychologist specializing in social behavior, has been recognized at the 2025 Independent Press Awards for her children's book, "The Dancing Darlings." This delightful picture book, honored in the Picture Books-All Ages category, represents a unique transition for Dr. Kyparissis, who has translated her understanding of human behavior into heartwarming stories for young readers. Dr. Kyparissis's journey to children's literature stems from her professional experiences. Witnessing firsthand the impact of childhood experiences on adult lives, she recognized the crucial role of positive early narratives. The birth of her own children further solidified this understanding, inspiring her to create bedtime stories filled with vibrant imagery and meaningful messages. "My children...changed my perspective on what is important in life," she explains, "and they inspired me to write my book." These stories, initially created for her own children, evolved into "The Dancing Darlings," a book aimed at fostering healthy mental and emotional development in young minds. Dr. Kyparissis finds inspiration in diverse figures. George R.R. Martin's world-building prowess and Giannis Antetokounmpo's humility resonate with her. She also expresses deep gratitude to her children, parents, and husband for their unwavering support. "Fun and colorful stories for children aimed at helping their mental and emotional development," encapsulates her writing's purpose. In addition to her writing, Dr. Kyparissis founded Livres Agapé Books in 2023. Initially a platform for her own work, the independent publishing house has expanded to support other authors, offering a space for passionate storytellers to share their voices. With a promising lineup for 2025, Livres Agapé Books is poised to make a significant contribution to the literary landscape. "The Dancing Darlings" is a testament to the power of storytelling to nurture and inspire, a message that resonates deeply with Dr. Kyparissis's work. < Back The Adoption Paradox: Putting Adoption in Perspective Jean Kelly Widner Parenting, adoption, identity, loss, trauma, family dynamics, advocacy Ink & Quill Publishing Buy this book: Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest In "The Adoption Paradox," Jean Kelly Widner unravels the complex realities of adoption, revealing its emotional, psychological, and historical impacts on adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive families, while advocating for ethical practices and greater understanding within the adoption community. In "The Adoption Paradox," Jean Kelly Widner offers a compassionate look into the complex world of adoption. The book is a comprehensive exploration, balancing historical context, psychological insights, and, most importantly, the deeply personal stories of those whose lives have been shaped by adoption. Widner’s work challenges the often-idealized view of adoption, revealing its inherent dualities and the lifelong emotional impacts on adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive families. The book begins with Widner’s own poignant adoptee story, which serves as a powerful entry point into the broader conversation. She openly shares the paradoxes of her own life, from the loving security provided by her adoptive parents to the underlying struggles within her family. This personal foundation gives the book a raw authenticity, setting the stage for a narrative that is both academic and deeply human. Widner then traces the history of adoption in America. She delves into the Baby Scoop Era, where societal pressures and shame led to a massive number of relinquishments, leaving a legacy of trauma for both birth mothers and adoptees. The book also sheds light on the tragic history of Native American adoption, detailing the cultural genocide perpetrated through forced assimilation and the eventual protections offered by the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). By providing this historical context, Widner demonstrates that adoption is not a static concept but a practice that has evolved with, and been shaped by, societal norms and injustices. The book’s greatest strength is its inclusion of first-hand accounts. Through these personal stories, Widner gives voice to the diverse experiences within the "adoption constellation." Adoptees share their feelings of abandonment and the struggle to integrate their dual identities. Birth parents recount the pain of relinquishment and the lasting trauma they endure. Adoptive parents speak candidly about their motivations and the challenges they face. These interwoven narratives create a multi-layered tapestry that captures the emotional spectrum of the adoption journey. Ultimately, The Adoption Paradox is an insightful work that urges readers to critically re-evaluate adoption practices. Widner’s call to action is a plea for greater awareness and compassion, advocating for a future where the well-being of all parties involved is paramount. This book is an essential read for anyone connected to adoption, offering a path toward healing, understanding, and a more ethical and humane approach to family-building. Previous Next

< Back Franke James From Canvas to Climate: How a Worried Artist Accidentally Became an Award-Winning Author Franke James never envisioned herself as a writer. With an MFA and a passion for fine art, her path seemed clear: to express herself through visual mediums. However, a growing unease about the world's apathy towards climate change shifted her focus, leading to an unexpected literary journey. James was deeply concerned about climate change, and “in 2006, I was writing long, well-researched articles," James recalls, but “I was getting zero response." Frustration mounted, until a breakthrough moment in January 2007. Her first illustrated essay, "A Green Winter: Will Global Warming Be Good for Canada?", a true story about climate change, resonated powerfully. Suddenly, the silence was broken. "The response was instantaneous," she says. "An outpouring of comments, magazine articles, a request to publish the essay in an anthology, and even an invitation to turn it into an animated film." This unexpected success ignited a new creative fire. James began crafting more true stories about personal activism, tackling issues like giving up her SUV in "My SUV and Me Say Goodbye" and battling city hall for a green driveway in "Paradise Unpaved." Posting her essays online attracted the attention of New Society Press, which published her collection, "Bothered By My Green Conscience," in 2009. This marked the official transition from artist to author. Since then, James has penned three more books, culminating in her latest triumph, "Freeing Teresa: A True Story about My Sister and Me." This deeply personal narrative, chronicling her fight to rescue her youngest sister from a nursing home, has garnered significant acclaim, winning the 2025 Independent Press Award in Audiobooks as well as the NYC Big Book Award for Social/Political Change and the Audiobook Nonfiction categories. The audiobook, brought to life by a talented cast including Jackie Blackmore, Lauren Potter, and Dayleigh Nelson, further amplifies the story's emotional impact. James attributes her drive to activism and caregiving to the profound influence of her late father, a lawyer who exemplified unwavering dedication to justice and family. "He greatly influenced me and inspired me to become an activist for justice and a caregiver," she explains. His unwavering support, particularly when caring for her mother after a stroke, taught her the power of perseverance and compassion. "He fought the doctors, who advised that he pull the plug. Instead, he brought my mother home and cared for her," she recounts. "They celebrated every small achievement as a victory! He refused to put her in a nursing home and cared for her every day for the next sixteen years until her death at home." Another powerful inspiration is the late Terry Fox, the one-legged athlete who ran across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. "He was the one-legged athlete who ran a marathon a day halfway across Canada in 1980—until cancer struck again," James says. Fox's legacy of determination and altruism continues to resonate, inspiring her sister Teresa and countless others. "Every one of us is important. Just look at what one person can do," James quotes Fox, a sentiment that echoes throughout her own journey. From a concerned artist to an award-winning author, Franke James proves that a single voice, fueled by passion and conviction, can indeed make a difference. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of storytelling and the enduring impact of personal activism. Share this article Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link

< Back Secrets Kay Louise Bowen Romance, redemption, secrecy, relationships, fresh start Austin Macauley Publishers Buy this book: Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest In a quest for healing and a fresh start, a troubled receptionist at a picturesque hotel must confront her dark past and navigate complicated relationships, all while discovering the power of love and resilience amidst the shadows of trauma. "Secrets" is a contemporary novel by Kay Louise Bowen that explores the nature of hidden truths and the arduous journey toward healing. Set against the deceptively tranquil backdrop of the Haven Hotel, the novel centers on the influence of past traumas on present relationships, weaving together threads of secrecy, trust, healing and renewal. This peaceful locale stands in contrast to the turbulent emotional lives of its inhabitants, acting as a sanctuary where they are finally forced to confront their shadows. The story’s core lies with its key characters. Gina arrives at the Haven Hotel, seeking a fresh start after the devastating public revelation and subsequent conviction of her ex-husband, David. Her guarded nature is a consequence of his crime, and her journey is one of dismantling the self-doubt and guilt often internalized by victims of betrayal. Neil Adams, the charismatic brother of the hotel’s owner, quickly develops an interest in Gina. However, he carries his own heavy burden of unresolved issues and a troubled history, struggling with his reputation and the burden of disappointing his protective sister, Abigail (Abby) Adams. Abby, in turn, is a study of loyalty versus pragmatism, constantly calculating the risk to her family's reputation and legacy. The fragile order they attempt to build is shattered by Annabel, the catalyst for the main conflict, a woman from Neil’s past who returns with a shocking claim. Meanwhile, David, Gina's incarcerated ex-husband, continues to exert a damaging influence from behind bars, embodying the lasting, toxic impact of past trauma. The novel’s structure builds around the central theme of secrets. In the beginning, we see Gina seeking solace, establishing a routine that shields her from the pain. She finds herself cautiously drawn to Neil, even as his persistent interest highlights the risk of forming new connections after deep betrayal. As Gina settles in, continuously reflecting on the scandal that drove her there, the tension mounts. Neil's complicated history begins to surface, culminating in the dramatic return of Annabel, which shatters the budding connection and prompts Gina to retreat. The middle of the book explores the intense fallout, forcing Neil to grapple with the consequences of his past while Gina struggles with her resurfacing fears—a fear of exposure and a fear of trusting again. Abby’s decisive intervention, investigating Annabel's claims and noticing troubling inconsistencies, is crucial and marks the necessary beginning of collective healing. The climax delivers when Abby uncovers the truth, allowing Neil and Gina to finally reconcile and move forward on a foundation of honesty. Simultaneously, Gina takes proactive legal action against the continuing threat posed by her ex-husband, ensuring her self-protection. The conclusion brings a sense of closure and renewal, as Gina and Neil solidify their relationship. The narrative ties up the dramatic threads of the past, ensuring that the disruptive forces including Annabel's claims and David's continued influence are decisively neutralized. The story ends on a hopeful note, focusing on Gina and Neil’s shared future, finally free from the shadows of their troubled histories. Kay Louise Bowen’s "Secrets" moves beyond a simple romance to offer a complex psychological study of how people rebuild their lives after betrayal and trauma. While the prose remains straightforward, which readers may find less evocative, the strength of the plot and the emotional payoff are engaging. Previous Next
