Book review of The Legend of Chris Moose by Allen Northcutt . ISBN: 978-1938462016 < Back Take me back to https://www.childrensbookwormaward.com/ The Legend of Chris Moose Allen Northcutt Childrens: Holiday Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest This picture book introduces eleven animal characters in rhyme as they join Ugly on a snowy trip through the woods to Momma and Poppa Bears’ house. There, a Christmas eve party is made very special when Ugly gives unselfishly of himself to overcome a forgotten Christmas tree. Author Allen Northcutt’s fun-filled holiday tale weaves a whimsical “ugly duckling” story of animal friends that love an amiable but tattered moose whose name is “Ugly”. Published by Old Stone Press, Allen Northcutt’s book “The Legend of Chris Moose” points out that “we all have value to our family and friends.” This picture book introduces eleven animal characters in rhyme as they join Ugly on a snowy trip through the woods to Momma and Poppa Bears’ house. There, a Christmas eve party is made very special when Ugly gives unselfishly of himself to overcome a forgotten Christmas tree. The story addresses everyday issues of how “Ugly” names are hurtful and it is not nice to exclude someone from a group because they are different. In the end the animals embrace Ugly as part of their group and change his name to Chris Moose, because it sounds so much like Christmas and is what his spirit is all about. This Christmas story is so touching and Northcutt drove it home with the thought that no matter who you are, if you search hard enough, you will find something that you can give of yourself. What an incredible mantra to live by. Giving value, being valued, and making something greater of yourself to those around you is something I can’t think could be a better purpose of living. This incredible lesson lands this book at the top of the heap in terms of teaching each one of us that we have value, and giving value to those around us, strikes to the core of our existence. Well-illustrated, and solidly constructed, this book will last through many reads and is guaranteed to be an annual favorite read during the Christmas Holiday Season. Christie Morris’ captivating and humorous illustrations add magic to this soon-to-be-classic Christmas story. Previous Next

Book review of Love To The Extreme: A Miracle Unfolds by Dr. Fang Miao . ISBN: < Back Love To The Extreme: A Miracle Unfolds Dr. Fang Miao Spiritual, Self-help, Relationships Scientific Open Access Publishing Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest Unleashing your Inner Power through personal growth, empowerment, and aspirations to achieve happiness. Dr. Fang Miao's latest book "Love To The Extreme: A Miracle Unfolds" (Bi-lingual, parallel in English and Chinese text) takes us on a journey into the interconnected realms of personal growth, empowerment, and our aspirations to achieve happiness. Written in an accessible, conversational style, the book provides readers with insights and solutions to achieve genuine success and fulfillment. Dr. Miao navigates various aspects of life, including material wealth, relationships, physical and mental well-being, and inner self-connection. A central theme she argues is the paramount importance of elevating life energy over merely accumulating money. Readers will discover how to confront and transform inherited beliefs, cultivate virtue, and focus on inner growth to reshape their destiny and manifest miracles. Dr. Miao shares her personal experiences to make her points. She recounts an encounter with a teacher during her university years, an experience that led her to unearth her true dreams and ultimately meet her husband. This personal narrative serves as a testament to her core message: the absolute necessity of daring to dream and taking decisive action to turn those aspirations into tangible reality. The book then introduces the concept of the "tree of life," a metaphor that illustrates how true abundance stems from elevating one's life energy. Dr. Miao explains the essence of money not as a static entity, but as a form of energy. She delves into the profound power of beliefs, revealing how they shape our individual realities. Through anecdotes, she exemplifies the far-reaching impact of inherited beliefs, particularly on one's financial situation. Dr. Miao confronts the often-misunderstood concept of destiny, revealing it as a tapestry woven from ancestral influences, past experiences, and individual personality. She shares inspiring examples of individuals who, through profound self-realizations or the guidance of enlightened mentors, successfully transformed their destiny, proving that personal evolution is always within reach. In the realm of relationships, Dr. Miao champions the significance of authentic communication and the act of taking personal responsibility for one's own happiness. She explains that true happiness is an internal state, not dependent on external factors. The book further explores the intricate dynamics of family relationships, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a natural order and aligning with one's inherent roles for harmonious interactions. The book culminates with a discussion on the power of goodness and the intrinsically neutral nature of money. Dr. Miao presents examples of individuals who leveraged their wealth not for personal gain, but for the betterment of humanity. She encourages readers to pursue wealth by actively becoming better people and fostering a genuine desire to improve the world around them. The central thesis of Dr. Miao's book is clear: true abundance and fulfillment are born from elevating life energy, transforming limiting beliefs, and steadfastly focusing on inner growth. Dr. Miao's integration of personal anecdotes with practical, actionable advice and philosophical insights, offers a holistic approach to personal development. Ultimately, this book empowers individuals to not only enhance their own lives but also to contribute to the creation of a more compassionate, purposeful, and inspired world. Previous Next

Book review of Lolly the Left Out Lobster by Allison Hill, Illustrated by Sandie Sonke . ISBN: < Back Take me back to https://www.childrensbookwormaward.com/ Lolly the Left Out Lobster Allison Hill, Illustrated by Sandie Sonke Courage, Friendship, Differences, Belonging Eat Laugh Give Productions Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest Have you ever felt left out? Have you ever felt like you don't belong? "Lolly" is a fun tale that helps your little one learn the importance of empathy and understanding others. "Lolly, the Left Out Lobster," written by Allison Hill and illustrated by Sande Sonke is a heartwarming tale aimed at fostering kindness, compassion, and understanding in young readers. The story follows Lolly, a sweet little lobster who gets caught in a storm and is swept away from her home in the sea, finding herself stranded in the woods. Feeling out of place and different, Lolly tries to seek help from the various forest animals she encounters. However, many of them initially shun her because of her unusual appearance and because she doesn't "belong" in their environment. Despite facing rejection, Lolly bravely continues to ask for help. Eventually, she finds a compassionate group of friends – a crew of pups – who see past her differences. These unlikely friends help Lolly navigate her way back to her family and the ocean. “Lolly” highlights the importance of approaching others with an open heart and mind, and not judging based on appearances or differences, which teaches children empathy and understanding. Also Lolly’s journey emphasizes that it's okay to be different and that true friendship, acceptance and belonging can be found in unexpected places. Furthermore, Lolly's determination to keep seeking help despite being "left out" shows Courage and Persistence. Lastly, the story encourages readers to embrace and appreciate diversity, showing how connecting with those who are different can make the world a kinder and better place. The illustrations for "Lolly the Left Out Lobster" are appealing and effective. Not overly busy, Sonke’s use of color and fun illustrations translate into bright, engaging visuals in "Lolly” that will capture and hold a young child's attention. Vibrant colors help set the mood and differentiate between Lolly's journey in the woods and her eventual return to the vibrant ocean. The illustrations perfectly complement Hill's text. They visually reinforce the themes of feeling different, seeking help, and finding belonging. For example, when Lolly is "left out," the visuals might emphasize her isolation, while scenes of her finding new friends are likely to be filled with warmth and connection. The book is recommended for librarians, teachers and therapists, and it includes a guide at the back of the book for adults with suggestions for conversations about feeling left out and understanding others' perspectives. “Lolly” delivers an important social message in an engaging way for young children, although it's for children of all ages. Book review of Roglins by Anna Spencer . ISBN: 978-1787882799 < Back Take me back to https://www.childrensbookwormaward.com/ Roglins Anna Spencer Picture Books-Ages 4-8 Pegasus Nightingale Books Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest The writing is rhythmic and whimsical, engaging young readers with light-hearted language. The use of rhyme adds to the playful tone. Each poem maintains a lively pace suitable for children, ensuring the narrative doesn't drag. Anna Spencer's debut children's book, "Roglins," introduces readers to a whimsical world of tiny creatures hidden in the grass. These unique and charming beings are brought to life through Spencer's rhyming text and captivating illustrations. The book delves into the Roglins' daily lives, showcasing their playful antics and simple joys. With its rhythmic text and imaginative artwork, "Roglins" offers a delightful reading experience for young children, sparking their curiosity and imagination. The Roglins themselves are inventive and imaginative characters. Each one has distinctive features and personalities, making them endearing and memorable. The book's imaginative world and quirky characters create a truly captivating reading experience. Spencer's writing is rhythmic and whimsical, engaging young readers with light-hearted language and rhyme. Each poem maintains a lively pace, ensuring the narrative flows smoothly. While Spencer has a history of selling her artwork internationally, she found her true passion in creating children's books. "Roglins" marks the culmination of her artistic journey, showcasing her talent for storytelling and world-building. The vast variety of characters in your story mean readers will fall in love with at least one of your Roglins. Do you find yourself connecting with one in particular? I think each one has a part of me. And in my rhymes, it is all about happy endings. In Hidden Treasure, for example the story is all about exploration. There are times in life when we need to leave everything behind to start a new chapter. If we don’t take that step, we risk staying stuck in the same place. So, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone —sometimes, taking a different path can lead to incredible opportunities. In Longing, the story focuses on helping others and making a meaningful change in someone's life. In this example, the narrator builds a glider to help a little Roglin soar and experience flight. Once again, the theme centers on a heartwarming, happy ending. Some of the poems are all about fun, like Wasp Whisperer, Creepy Crawlies, and Roglin the Knight. These poems are filled with amusing characters, offering a delightful escape into a world of imagination and joy. Book review of Super Science Vol. 2 by Nicholas Kalikow . ISBN: 9781964226248 < Back Super Science Vol. 2 Nicholas Kalikow The Lab Press Share this review: Copy link Facebook LinkedIn X (Twitter) WhatsApp Pinterest Super Science, Vol. 2 is a fast-paced sci-fi comedy following two LAPD officers navigating corporate conspiracies, absurd villains, and high-stakes battles. (Pub Date: March 3, 2027) Picking up seamlessly from its high-octane debut, Super Science, Vol. 2 expands the chaos engulfing Los Angeles. Created by N. Alessandro K. (Kalikow) alongside illustrator M.K. Perker (The Ugliest Kid on Earth, The Unwritten, Insomnia Cafe), with cover art by Bill Sienkiewicz (Elektra: Assassin, Stray Toasters, Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?) and Tula Lotay (Lisa Wood, of Somna, Scarlet Witch, Groupies), this sophomore installment blurs the boundaries separating traditional superheroes from supervillains, and superhumans from everyday people. Its satire plays beyond familiar comic book archetypes to scrutinize the figures who shape public influence—politicians, corporate executives, and social media celebrities alike. Kalikow recasts influence as a “super power,” arguing that its unchecked pursuit breeds corruption and forces his characters to confront competing ideas centering identity, justice, and moral responsibility. The story unfolds after the sky mysteriously turns lavender, sparking a wave of self-made superheroes across Los Angeles. Every origin story reflects personal ambition over altruism: Ladycat, once a biology teacher, injects herself with feline DNA; meanwhile, the Gas Giant acquires toxic abilities by consuming irradiated food during a paid research study. Industrialist Burt Montague perfects a machine capable of shrinking people with absolute precision, yet fails to consider how to reverse its effects. These bizarre transformations double as satirical critiques, exposing how ego and opportunism shape nearly every pursuit of power. This emphasis on human conceit gives unexpected prominence to Lieutenant Dante Richey’s police task force, particularly Sergeant Esmeralda Villanueva (“EV”) and Officer Jack Mantle. Their greatest strengths lie in a collective commitment to public service, fueled by persistence and sound judgment with every crime scene they encounter. Where Los Angeles’ manmade superhumans pursue notoriety and gain spectacle, beat cops like EV and Mantle quietly shoulder the difficult work of protecting their city, portraying a stark contrast that reframes heroism as a matter of raw character. The volume reaches its greatest depth through its moral ambiguity. Supervillains such as Nike and Ringmaster present obvious threats, though the most compelling conflicts arise from compromised institutions and divided loyalties. Brad Mantle, the FBI liaison assigned to Montague Industries and Jack Mantle’s brother, abandons protocol during a rescue mission before gradually embracing increasingly questionable methods. Gabe Villanueva, EV’s gifted young son, secretly develops software for supervillains because he views them as people worthy of support, not condemnation. His concealed double life carries added emotional weight because his mother’s squad is actively hunting the very individuals he assists. With each betrayal comes the complication of the novel’s understanding of justice and yet another revelation as to how impassioned conviction from anywhere along the morality spectrum can easily give way to compromise. Throughout Super Science, Vol. 2, Los Angeles emerges as a city where performance extends far beyond Hollywood. Masks take many forms, from colorful costumes to polished political messaging, corporate branding, and carefully guarded family secrets. Perker’s expressive artwork grounds the escalating absurdity with cinematic clarity, allowing visual comedy to coexist with moments of genuine emotional tension. Together, Kalikow and Perker use the language of superhero fiction to examine the responsibilities that accompany power alongside the ambition and loyalty that uphold it. Energetic and incisive, Super Science, Vol. 2 broadens the satirical scope of the series, revealing that the greatest divide lies not between heroes and villains, but between the identities people perform and the choices that ultimately define them.
