Kathleen Welton

From Publisher to Storyteller: Kathleen Welton’s Lifelong Love Affair with the Written Word

For over forty-five years, Kathleen Welton was an editor and publisher, working alongside some of publishing's most visionary minds to help other voices find their audience. Her literary roots run deep, beginning with her studies in English and Italian Literature at Stanford University. Yet, after decades spent making books, Welton decided it was time to create her own.

Armed with a Feature Film Writing Certificate from UCLA Extension, Welton began translating cinematic ideas into children’s picture books and novels. Her creative sparks can be traced back to childhood, where devouring Nancy Drew mysteries ignited a lifelong fascination with proactive characters and community-led problem solving.

Adding to her growing list of literary accolades, Welton’s captivating children's book, Be WHOO You Are, garnered well-deserved recognition at the NYC Big Book Award. Beautifully brought to life by illustrator Nuno Alexandre Vieira, the story follows a young owl named Ollie on a journey of self-discovery, kindness, and learning to embrace his unique gifts. The prestigious award highlights Welton’s talent for crafting meaningful, uplifting narratives that connect deeply with young readers and celebrate the power of individual identity.

Today, that early inspiration has evolved into a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and conservation. Welton draws immense creative energy from the tireless work of wildlife volunteers, such as the organizations dedicated to protecting the wild horses and sea turtles of the Outer Banks.

From her home near the serene shores of Lake Michigan, Welton now spends her days conducting a joyful, purposeful exploration of the natural world through her writing. Her published works seamlessly blend a passion for literacy with environmental advocacy, offering readers of all ages a collection of heartfelt, uplifting stories. Ultimately, Welton's books serve a singular, powerful mission: to inspire her audience to celebrate wildlife, embrace gratitude, and courageously pursue their biggest dreams.
