BISG Opens Its Doors: New Membership Options for Agents, Students, and Independent Publishers

The Book Industry Study Group (BISG), a leading association dedicated to strengthening collaboration and improving standards across the book publishing supply chain, has announced significant updates to its 2026 membership structure. These changes, which include introducing new membership categories and implementing a modest adjustment to overall dues, reflect the organization's commitment to long-term sustainability, inclusion, and accessibility for a wider range of industry professionals.

In a move aligning with its priority to broaden representation, BISG has formally introduced a new category specifically tailored to the literary agent community. The Level A2 – Agent Member category, with annual dues set at $180, grants agents full access to all individual-level benefits. With a theme of development and support of future publishing professionals, BISG has introduced the Level A3 – Student Member membership ($120 annual dues, with proof of enrollment) for individuals in graduate-level or trade programs related to the book industry, including publishing, library science, and manufacturing.

At one-third of the minimum commercial rate, this level ensures that these vital contributors can participate fully in BISG’s essential work.

To support its growing programming, committee work, and member services, BISG’s Board of Directors has implemented an average dues increase of 3% across its commercial and nonprofit membership categories. This modest dues adjustment is a necessary step for the organization’s long-term health. Notably, this represents only the second dues adjustment in the last decade, with the previous increase occurring in 2022, ensuring BISG can continue delivering high-value standards development, education, and member support while remaining accessible.
